The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) is is engaging Jackfish residents to review the results of a recent building condition assessment and provide input on the future of the Jackfish Community Hall, located at 1515 Old Jackfish Road.

The hall, located outside of Chetwynd, is owned by the PRRD and historically was operated by the Jackfish Lake Community Club.

A facility assessment in 2021, coupled with damage from a heating failure, determined that the facility needs substantial repairs, maintenance and upgrades to improve fire safety and accessibility. The facility has been closed since 2021 due to these factors. The hall currently lacks a consistent way to fund the repairs and ongoing operations of the building, relying on temporary grants and fundraising.

Residents are asked to consider whether they support repairing the hall based on the findings of the building assessment through an online survey and community meeting. This is the final planned community meeting for this project. If there is clear community support, approval from the Province, and the Board approves moving forward, a public vote (referendum) could happen on October 17, 2026.

If approved through a referendum, development and renovations to the facility will have ongoing expenses that would be paid through taxation.

The following taxation estimates are based off a proposed service area map. Note that this service area is still subject to Ministerial approval.

    Estimated Annual Costs

Estimates for tax rates are calculated on the value of all improvements (this includes taxing on buildings only and does not include the value of the land).

Costs for the Community Hall include:

    • PRRD Expenses
    • Grant to Society for operation of the building (utilities, internet access, liability insurance, maintenance, janitorial supplies, health permitting)
    • Capital Reserve Contributions (held by the Regional District to fund future large-scale repairs, upgrades, and eventual replacement)
    • Annual debt repayment

Estimated annual cost: $70,000-$90,000 per year, which may decrease or increase based on actual costs.

How to Estimate Your Annual Tax

    1. Visit bcassessment.ca
    2. Search for your property using the “Find your property assessment” tool
    3. Locate the “Improvements Only” value (building value, not land)
    4. Divide that value by 1,000
    5. Multiply by the tax rate for your preferred option

    Example:
    $150,000 ÷ 1,000 = 150
    150 × 0.23 = $34.50 per year

Note: Estimates are based on 2025 assessment values. Actual costs may vary.
