The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) is seeking community input on the future of the Jackfish Community Hall. The hall, located outside of Chetwynd on 1515 Old Jackfish Road, is owned by the PRRD and operated by the Jackfish Lake Community Club.

A facility assessment in 2021, coupled with damage from a heating failure, determined that the facility needs substantial repairs, maintenance and upgrades to improve fire safety and accessibility. The facility has been closed since 2021 due to these factors. The hall currently lacks a consistent way to fund the repairs and ongoing operations of the building, relying on temporary grants and fundraising.

To find a sustainable solution, the PRRD is held a community meeting and online survey to determine if locals still want to use the hall, whether they would support a dedicated funding plan using local taxation and if the community is willing to continue managing its day-to-day operations. The feedback from the community engagement will help the PRRD Regional Board decide on the next steps for the hall's operation.

Is there a total cost breakdown for the 1MM spend over the 15 years?

Vern asked about 2 months ago

    Hi Vern,

Based on our current calculations, the total yearly taxation cost is estimated at $71,813.

Here's a breakdown of where that money would go:

    • $7,590 for the day-to-day PRRD administration of the service.
    • $20,000 for the organization's yearly operating expenses like utilities, insurance and janitorial.
    • $15,000 PRRD's savings for future major repairs and replacements.
    • $29,223 for a 15-year loan to cover the initial repairs, maintenance and debt servicing.

Just remember that these are early numbers and this estimate can change. We'll have a more accurate estimate after we've heard from the community and have been given approval by the Regional Board to move forward with more detailed planning.
