Consultation has concluded! The Regional Solid Waste Management Plan was submitted to the Regional Board in July and approved, and then submitted to the Ministry of Environment on July 12, 2021. We thank everyone who took the time to attend a virtual open houses, respond to the survey and followed along with this project.

Dealing with solid waste effectively is extremely challenging in northern British Columbia due to:

Transportation costs
Lack of markets for recycled items and waste products
Illegal dumping

Solid waste includes:

  • everything that residents, businesses and industries put in their recycling boxes and trash cans
  • everything they take to waste transfer stations
  • various kinds of waste that are dumped illegally around the PRRD, some of which is hazardous and is a risk to human health and the environment.

The Ministry of Environment (MOE) requires all regional districts in British Columbia to have a plan for how solid waste will be managed and reduced. The Peace River Regional District's Regional Solid Waste Management Plan (RSWMP) helps us manage waste in the safest and most cost-effective way possible.

With your help and input, we can create a strong solid waste management plan that addresses emerging local issues and sets out waste reduction goals for the next 15 years.

  • Share I've noticed substantial garbage blowing out of the dump at the end of 269rd. Is there a plan to have this cleaned up? Espesially with it blowing onto somebody's private land and in such close proximity to the major river in our area I believe this needs so be addressed soon and done multiple times per year! on Facebook Share I've noticed substantial garbage blowing out of the dump at the end of 269rd. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Scatter of this magnitude is a serious issue to the PRRD as well. We are currently in discussion with the contractor to remedy this as soon as possible. If you have any questions please contact environmental services at 250-784-3200. We will also post an update on this thread when the issue has been resolved.
