Project background

In 2020, the PRRD conducted a feasibility study in Wonowon after residents expressed safety concerns for pedestrians and children walking to and from Wonowon Elementary School in low-light conditions. Residents have also expressed concerns about dust level, mud and roughness on area roads.

Wonowon Road, Wonowon Subdivision Road, and Wonowon Extension Road were all studied for the following options:

  • development of a trail along the existing roads
  • streetlighting on either the roads, trail or both
  • upgrades to the existing road

Consultation has concluded for this project. In 2020, the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) studied the possibility of building trails and upgrading roads to make it safer for children walking to Wonowon Elementary School in low-light conditions.

The study revealed that the project would cost between $3-14.6 million and require the involvement of the Ministry of Transportation (as the PRRD does not manage roads). An additional study would also be needed to identify a preferred route, leading to negotiations with landowners to buy property for the trail.

Following a community meeting, the project was discontinued in 2023. If you have any questions, please contact community.services@prrd.bc.ca.
