What is an Official Community Plan (OCP)?

An Official Community Plan sets out the vision for an area for the future. It provides a framework to guide decision-making on land use planning matters including where new growth and development will be directed to, what uses are permitted and how areas will be protected for things like agriculture, recreation and the environment.

    Who are the stakeholders?

Some of the stakeholders for this project include:

    • Ministry of Agriculture
    • Agricultural Land Commission
    • Northern Health
    • Ministry of Transportation
    • City of Fort St. John
    • District of Taylor

Why has this review taken so long?

Official Community Plans are large and complex documents which require a lot of public and stakeholder input. The initial project was started in 2015 and the last draft plan was released for public and stakeholder feedback in 2018. In early 2019 the Province of BC made it mandatory that all local governments complete a housing needs assessment and that the information from those assessments be incorporated into their Official Community Plans.

This, along with staffing shortages, the Old Fort landslide and COVID have led to project being delayed much longer than expected. But the good news is we are still moving along and appreciate your time and patience in getting this big project across the finish line!
